3 Cocktails to Enjoy Fireside this Winter
As the song goes ‘the weather outside is frightful, but the fire is so delightful’.
That line is a classic for a good reason, when the weather turns dark and cold, when the wind howls and there is a foot a fresh snow out on the driveway waiting for you to go out and try to shovel. The natural instinct is to retreat in to the warmth of the house and sit by the fire!
Now picture yourself sitting there by your new Napoleon fireplace, the flames lighting up and warming up your living room, creating the perfect setting for an intimate dinner date, family board game night, or just having some friends over to watch the hockey game….
But there is one thing missing you need to complete the scene. The perfect winter fireside cocktail!
Here are 3 perfect winter cocktails to enjoy fireside!
- Winter Old Fashioned
How would you like to feel like Don Draper form Mad Men… Even when your are lounging by the fire in your old sweatpants? Perfect then all you need is a wintry Old Fashioned
This recipe makes 4 at a time so go ahead and invite some friends over!
To make this one you’ll need 1 cup sugar, 1 cup water, 3 cardamom pods, 1 star anise, 5 cinnamon stick (1 for simmering and the rest for garnish), 12 ounces of your go to bourbon or whisky, (I’m partial to Bulleit myself) an orange and some maraschino cherries.
To get started you are going to need to make an infused simple syrup, place the sugar, water, cardamom, star anise and a single cinnamon stick in a pan and get it simmering until that sugar dissolves. Then bring it to a boil. Once its bubbling remove it from the heat, cover it and let it settle for half an hour. Once the mix has cooled, you can stick it in the fridge until you are ready to go!
Once your guests have arrived, divide up that orange in to wedges, muddle an orange slice and two cherries into each glass. Pour your syrup and bourbon into a sizeable shaker with some ice cubes, shake it like a Polaroid picture
Then split the mix into the glasses and if you like garnish with some of the remaining cinnamon sticks!
2. This delicious looking Bourbon and Citrus Sangria!
Who says you have to be sitting on a beach on a sunny day to enjoy Sangria! This one is great for sitting around that beautiful roaring fire!
Get the recipe here!
3. Mulled Wine
The classic winter drink, its warm, with hints of spice and fruit. spice it up with a bit of brandy and you’ve got yourself the ultimate fireside drink.
To get this one started you’ll need, 1 bottle red wine (your choice), 1/2 cup water, 1/2 cup sugar, 1/4 cup brandy, 2 cinnamon sticks, 4 star anise, 1/2 tsp whole cloves, 5 crushed cardamom pods, 1/2 vanilla bean, 1/4 teaspoon grated nutmeg, 4 clementines juiced, 4 clementines sliced up.
To start in a large pot mix the sugar and the water over medium high heat, and stir the mixture until the sugar is dissolved, once dissolved add the clementine juice, the wine and the rest of the ingredients and heat until everything starts to simmer. Once it’s simmering drop the heat to low just to keep it warm and let the flavours get to know each other for about a half hour before serving. Strain the liquid into some mugs before serving and your done!
Then just sit down by the roaring fire and enjoy!
Stay warm this winter friends,
