A passerby may well have saved the life of an occupant of a house near Elmvale Wednesday morning.
Someone driving by the house on Baseline Road noticed smoke coming from the eves just before 8 a-m. They called 911 and Springwater fire Chief Ian Gavet says the deputy-chief was first on the scene and woke up the home owner. The occupant and several dogs made it out safely.
The fire started in the attic area, so the smoke did not reach the alarms in the living space below.
The the exact cause is under investigation but it’s believed the fire may have started in the chimney area.
The structure is a former school house and sustained damage to the roof and parts of the interior.
